The
art of cultivating, nurturing and growing plants has been practiced
for thousands of generations. It was actually one of the early choices
made by humans that helped jump-start the first permanent civilizations.
It was a huge leap forward for humankind when it was discovered
that specific plants could be chosen to grow in certain areas, instead
of traveling from one place to another hunting and gathering. Humans
began staying in one spot year round and avidly chose and cultivated
many plant because of their nutritional value and their beauty.
This choice of what plants are allowed to live versus plants that
are weeded out has improved the size and taste of fruits and vegetables
and allowed some plants to evolve into much different versions of
their ancestors. The ancient potato, if it were still around, would
be completely unrecognizable compared with today’s large potatoes
because humankind has slowly been selecting the desirable plants
and allowing those grow and reproduce while the unwanted plants
are killed and not allowed to grow. The evolution of gardening has
evolved even further though, now plants are cultivated in gardens
exclusively for their beauty.
Gardening has become an activity enjoyed by people of all ages
and socioeconomic status. It can be done in cramped quarters, even
window sills, but most often people garden in their front and back
yards. Community gardens are popular in many cities where land is
scarce and often the focus is on growing food. Natural habitat gardens
contain local varieties of plants and are designed to mimic the
habitat that would naturally be there. Some people call this being
lazy for just allowing weeds to grow when in reality it can be difficult
to find plants that were not imported to the area. Weeds are often
plants that have been transplanted from other parts of the world
for aesthetic purposes that uncontrollably grow, take over and kill
the local flora.
Water gardens are becoming more popular because they are a form
of hydroponics that allows plants to grow much larger and quicker.
There has to be a medium that floats in the water, the first water
gardens used baskets filled with dirt but there are new designs
involving foam which allows for more transpiration and air to reach
the roots. These gardens are great in warm and wet environments
that have access to plenty of water. You can find quality hydroponic supplies online; try bchydroponics.com
Some gardens have very few plants if any at all. Some Japanese
gardens, specifically Zen gardens, are arrangements of rocks and
sand that are meant for the contemplation of life’s mysteries.
The rocks are arranged in a way that they cannot all be seen at
the same time, a metaphor for life, intelligence and ideas. Gardening
can become a type of meditation for many as they watch and nurture
their garden and see it flourish. It is very satisfying to see life
flourish from the simple actions of planting, watering and trimming.
Gardening can be relaxing, enjoyable and rewarding. If a vegetable
garden is planted it can also be a wonderful source of nourishment.
